At Pure Yoga & Pilates we teach a fusion of the traditional Pilates repertoire and Barre Movements, that we call “Pure Core” … This ultimately results in the best core workout around!!
Pilates focuses on stabilising joints & controlling your movements using your core muscles so that you become stronger & more mobile. It allows you to move more freely & with a greater range of motion & in many cases “pain-free” and has been known to:-
- Improve posture
- Provide better balance
- Increase strength & flexibility
- Reduce back pain
At the Pure Yoga & Pilates studio we concentrate on “Mat Pilates”. Mat Pilates was an important part of Joseph Pilates’ original method. The mat is where most people begin their exploration of Pilates only to learn that “Mat Pilates” is one of the hardest pieces in the Pilates puzzle to master. To be successful at “Mat Pilates” you need to find high levels of coordination & control.
History Of Pilates
Pilates is a total body exercise, developed almost 100 years ago by Joseph Pilates, to rehabilitate injured WW1 soldiers and later, for strength & conditioning of dancers.
Having a father who was a gymnast and a mother as a naturopath, led to Joseph developing a system of exercises that were intended to strengthen the human mind and body.
He believed that mental & physical health were interrelated and that the inspiration for his method came during World War One, while he was being held at the Knockaloe internment camp on the Isle of Man. It took him four years, working on his fellow internees, to develop & fine tune what would later be known as the Pilates Method!!
Joseph Pilates accompanied his method with a variety of equipment, for which he used the term “apparatus”. Each apparatus was designed to help accelerate the process of stretching, strengthening, body alignment and increased core strength started by the “Mat work”.
Joseph Pilates famously said … “In 10 sessions you will feel a difference, in 20 sessions you will see a difference and in 30 sessions you will have a whole new body” …
“I think it helps me with everyday movement – walking, lifting, balance & general strength. It has made me very aware of my core, pelvic floor muscles and I think it shows me if I keep practicing I can hopefully avoid falls & general muscle weakness that can occur as we age. I see some people that even have trouble walking any distance or lifting groceries, etc so maybe if I continue I will remain relatively fit & strong. Yeah to those people in their 80’s still lifting weights, walking & stretching!“ – Carol –
